Sony disclosed Twitter Vaio sales of over £1 million

Amplifyd from www.thebigmoney.com

Dell (DELL) generated tremendous buzz late last year in pulling off a Twitter first: selling $6.5 million-worth of PCs, software, and accessories via its corporate Twitter feed. Could other companies “pull off a Dell,” the experts wondered, using the microblogging platform to keep customers informed and to get them to buy stuff?

Sony’s European division wanted to find out. Recently, Sony Europe’s PR team went to the Sony Style group with a sales offer that it could share with its 1,600 Twitter followers: an offer to custom-build your own Sony Vaio laptop and get 10 percent knocked off from the final sale price. “It was incredibly successful,” says Nick Sharples, director of corporate communications for Sony Europe.

Airline Twitter promotion attracts huge crowds

Amplifyd from news.cnet.com

NEW YORK–It was apparently one step short of a cattle stampede when low-cost airline JetBlue used its Twitter account to announce that as part of its 10th anniversary celebration it would be giving out about a thousand free round-trip tickets at three undisclosed locations in Manhattan on Wednesday.

“One of the things we knew was that people were just going to follow us,” JetBlue public relations representative Morgan Johnston told CNET, relating anecdotes about one woman who claimed she sprinted in heels from midtown to the Financial District (one of the giveaway spots), people chasing the JetBlue team in taxis as they left one location to head to the next, entire offices clearing out when they heard that one of the ticket giveaways was nearby, and a cab driver who left his passenger behind in order to get out and claim a ticket. “It was like the Pied Piper of Hamlin.”

The creation of a digital community through connections with family, friends and shared interests has exploded beyond the imaginations of the creators.

Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare – the outlets continue to increase in variety and popularity. According to Nielsen Online, Twitter alone expanded 1,382 percent year-over-year in February, registering more than 7 million unique visitors in the United States for the month.

As college students, we engage in social media outlets every day. For many of us, logging on to Facebook to check the statuses of our friends and classmates is part of our daily routine.

Though many might consider tools such as Facebook and Twitter useless activities to enjoy during spare time, the knowledge of these platforms can be beneficial when applying for jobs.

Nod to Twitter and Facebook on the US Military network

Amplifyd from www.washingtonpost.com

Everyone from troops in the field to the highest brass and civilian leaders will be allowed to Twitter, blog and use Facebook and other social networking sites on the military’s non-classified computer network, the Pentagon announced Friday.

The new policy follows a seven-month review in which the Defense Department weighed the threats and benefits of allowing the wide use of emerging Internet capabilities. It seeks to manage risks while acknowledging the Internet’s utility for a myriad of tasks, including recruiting, public relations, collaboration with a wide range of people, and for communications between troops and their families.

Twitter Ads Imminent

Amplifyd from www.switched.com
According to MediaPost, Anamitra Banerji, head of product management and monetization at Twitter, has confirmed that the service is working on an advertising platform. This is following a panel on interactive advertising hosted by Seth Goldstein, CEO of socialmedia.com, where Banerji reportedly unveiled Twitter’s plans in a relatively vague fashion. According to Goldstein and MediaPost, the plan is to let brands and companies interact with consumers and capitalize on trending topics (can’t they already do this?), as well as ensure that the delivered content is “relevant and useful.” Banji also indicated that initially the ads would feature hash tags to distinguish them from tweets, but that the developers were working on a better solution.Read more at www.switched.com

How social media can help you find the right recruits

Amplifyd from www.silicon.com

There’s no doubt job seekers are getting more creative in their hunt for work. Given the current economic climate this is hardly surprising, as candidates simply have to do more to stand out from the crowd. But technology is the underlying driving force, arming wannabie workers with a plethora of tools to help them get noticed and stand out from the crowd.

Today’s job seekers can blog, create their video content, get involved in industry-specific social networking sites to gather knowledge, build contacts and even directly target specific individuals they want to work for - to name a few web 2.0 options available to them. At least one individual from ‘generation digital’ has taken things even further - paying for an ad on Facebook - selling himself as a potential recruit to magazine publishers.
